July History Programs at Liberty State Park

History programs continue at Liberty State Park with Trail of the Blue Comet on Wednesday, July 3, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Visitors can learn about the trail of this famous train all the way to its final destination of Atlantic City. This program will include a 60-minute Power Point presentation, discussion about the lasting impact of the Blue Comet and a clip from the documentary, “Deluxe: The Tale of the Blue Comet” followed by a walk to the train shed. The group will meet at the at the giant flag on the steps inside the CRRNJ Terminal located at 1 Audrey Zapp Drive, Jersey City. The program is recommended for ages 10 and up.

Pre-registration is required for all programs, as space is limited. To register for a program, contact the Nature Center at 201-915-3400 x503 or email LSPNatureCenter@dep.nj.gov. Children must be accompanied by an adult, and you may register a maximum of six participants per reservation. Pets are not permitted on programs unless they are service animals.

Live music at the fountain at Lincoln Park

Live music continues at the Lincoln Park fountain on Wednesday, July 3, with The Penniless Loafers performing ska, rock and jazz from 7 to 9 p.m.

Audiences can bring blankets, chairs, picnic dinners or purchase fare from one of the local food vendors at the show. The show is free to attend.

The event is sponsored by the West Side Arts & Music in Partnership with the County of Hudson, Hudson County Executive Craig Guy and the Board of County Commissioners, Hudson County Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs and the West Side Partnership.

Basketball tournament to return to Hoboken

The Vail Stones x Street Friends Basketball Tournament returns to Hoboken for its fourth year on Sunday, July 7, starting at 9 a.m. between 5th and 6th Streets on Marshall Drive in Hoboken.

The event features a full day basketball tournament and is dedicated to those lost to gun violence in the community. Music will be provided by DJ Bripee and there will also be free food.

Last year, the event honored Christopher Garcia, a 28-year-old Hoboken resident who lost his life to gun violence in 2022. The event received support from more than 28 sponsors including Vail Stones, Street Friends and What Hoboken Sounds Like, all of which have returned this year.

Venezuela Flag Raising

Mayor Steven Fulop and the Jersey City Municipal Council will host a flag raising ceremony in honor of Venezuela’s 213th anniversary of independence on Tuesday, July 9, at 3:30 p.m. at the City Hall Council Chambers.

The event will include a performance by the United Children’s Music Project and The Venezuela Dancer & Tambor.

The event is sponsored by El Cocotero Foundation Home of the Venezuelan Mirian Mavarez, Art Creation Inspired by Gloriela Dubner and co-sponsored by White Maiz Restaurant.

The City Hall Council Chambers is located at 280 Grove St., Jersey City.

Washington Park Summer Series

Jersey City’s Washington Park Summer Series begins on Wednesday, July 10, with four movies, a live poetry event and a live dance event. All shows begin at dusk around 7 p.m.

Palisades Family Success Center and Jelly’s Corner will also provide family friendly pre-show activities during the scheduled events and free popcorn will be handed out at each show.

The list of the events includes the following:

  • July 17 - “To Catch a Thief” (Movie)
  • July 24 - Live Spoken Poetry Event
  • July 31 - “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” (Movie)
  • Aug 7 - “The Little Mermaid” (Movie)
  • Aug 14 - (Rain Date)
  • Aug 21 - Live Dance Performance

Crossing the Hudson at MORA

The Museum of International Art (MORA) will host Crossing the Hudson, the 2024 Sculptors Guild Members Show, on Thursday, July 11, with an opening reception from 7 to 9 p.m. The show will be on view from July 9 to July 30. The exhibition features the work from members of the NYC Sculptors Guild.

The show’s name, Crossing the Hudson, is meant to draw upon the motivations that compel people to leave the comfort of their neighborhoods to see what lies beyond the Hudson.

The event is free to attend. MORA is located at 80 Grand St., Jersey City.

Maternal health seminar

The Hudson County Department of Housing & Community Reintegration and Department of Family Services will host a Maternal Health Seminar on Saturday, July 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Departments will be providing services from Medicaid, Housing and SNAP. The event will be hosted by Tamika McReynolds.

The Maternal Health Seminar will take place at the County Plaza Press Room, 257 Cornelison Ave., Jersey City.
