What is the easiest message to preach? ›

Prayer – one of the best sermon topics to preach

It's something we all need to get better at and it's something many people get nervous about doing or confess they don't do enough. When it comes to preaching through the sermon topic of prayer, there are countless passages, characters, and stories you can walk through.

Perhaps preach a story—Acts 12:1-19 is a great place to begin, or the parable of the lost sheep, or Jesus freeing the Garasene Demoniac. As much as possible, find a text that does not demand that you explain a lot of context before you can exposit it. Make sure you preach the text not an idea within the text.

Jesus's opening words suggest that God's kingdom is a dynamic reality. He says that the kingdom of God “is at hand” or “has drawn near”—using another perfect tense verb, ēngiken. This verb appears in the active voice, with the sense that the kingdom is on the cusp of dawning—indeed in some sense is already here.

Spiritual: topics like the Armor of God, the Beatitudes or the fruit of the Spirit. Felt need: messages on life change, behaviors or habits. Theology: Salvation, the Cross, the Trinity. Christian Practices: relationships, tithing and generosity or prayer life.

Stick with a message that is close to your own heart. In most cases a visiting preacher doesn't need to ask, “What do the people need?” because he won't know the answer. Stick close to the central truths of the Bible. Pick something that feels comfortable to you, that you care about and believe in.

You want to start your introduction with a similar level of tension, mystery, and even shock. This doesn't have to be a story. It could be a question. For instance, if you're preaching a message on forgiveness you can immediately introduce tension into the room by asking, “Have you ever been hurt by a close friend?

It originates from Psalm 19 as nearly a full quote of verse 14: “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord. Amen.” In North American contexts, this prayer is often employed before preaching, but it is neither an ancient custom, nor a universal one.

Average Sermon Length

A sermon is typically anywhere from 20-40 minutes long, with some going over an hour.

Do this by expositing specific books for a few months and moving on. Get this book (or section of a book) right, then go to the next book (or section). This avoids the danger of topical preaching in which you are merely opening your mind on prayer, evangelism, stewardship, family issues, etc.
